Overview

In recent times, Eritrea has occasionally been likened to North Korea in the African context, but such a comparison falls short in my view. Despite its current isolationist leadership and the absence of certain cherished political freedoms that marked its independence, Eritrea's allure extends far beyond this aspect. It offers a compelling blend of colonial architecture and cultural heritage in Asmara, alongside the strikingly distinct atmosphere of Keren, now influenced more by Sudan than Italy.

Massawa, positioned along the Red Sea, symbolizes Eritrea's future. While envisioning this future amid sweltering humidity and a sense of leisurely decline can be challenging, Eritreans are longing for change while also recognizing the debt owed to the heroes of their War of Independence. The official end of the conflict, achieved through the process of reconciliation with Ethiopia, marks a pivotal moment.

We provide tours in Eritrea, both as standalone experiences and in combination with neighboring countries in the Horn of Africa. These tours offer travelers the opportunity to gain profound insights into one of the world's proudest, most resilient, and historically captivating nations.

Asmara, beyond being a remarkably well-preserved showcase of Art Deco architecture, stands as one of the most intriguing destinations on Earth. The Dahlak Islands beckon with exceptional diving sites and captivating marine life, while Red Sea towns like Massawa offer glimpses into the heritage shaped by the Ottomans, enriching the cultural tapestry of the region.

Highlights:

  • Rich Cultural Heritage: Eritrea's unique blend of colonial architecture, cultural traditions, and the influence of neighboring nations create a captivating tapestry of history and heritage.
  • Asmara's Art Deco Beauty: Asmara's remarkably preserved Art Deco architecture offers a visual feast and a glimpse into the country's colonial past.
  • Resilience and Aspiration: Despite challenges, Eritreans desire change and are committed to preserving the memory of their War of Independence heroes.
  • End of Conflict: The official end of the conflict through reconciliation with Ethiopia represents a pivotal turning point in the nation's history, fostering hopes for a more peaceful future.
  • Diverse Exploration: From the Dahlak Islands' exceptional diving spots to the Ottoman-influenced Red Sea towns like Massawa, Eritrea presents an array of captivating experiences, making it a hidden gem for travelers.

In the morning, we will immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the camel market, where local tribesmen gather to trade these magnificent animals. Keren, with its rich history, bears the scars of heavy fighting during both World War II and the Eritrean War of Independence. The Sudanese influence is palpable in the attire, language, and delectable cuisine, notably the aromatic Sudanese tea, which is a highlight of this region. Our visit to Keren will also include a poignant moment as we pay our respects at the graves of British and Commonwealth troops who valiantly defeated the Italians during World War II, albeit at a significant cost. At the Italian cemetery, we will encounter the resting places of those who lost their lives in the pursuit and defense of the colonial project.
