After a satisfying breakfast, your day unfolds with a visit to two significant archaeological sites in Sudan, Naga and Mussawarat, before your journey continues to the ancient city of Meroe, renowned for its remarkable pyramids. Our first destination is Naga and Mussawarat, situated approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Khartoum. Both of these sites are celebrated for their ancient temples and historical ruins. Historically, Naga served as the capital of the Kingdom of Meroe, a pivotal hub for culture and religion, while Mussawarat was a significant religious site dedicated to the lion god, Apedemak. In Naga, you'll encounter an array of impressive ruins and structures, including the Temple of Amun, the Temple of Apedemak, and the Roman Kiosk. The Temple of Amun, believed to date back to the 3rd century BC, held great significance for the rulers of the Kingdom of Meroe. In the 1st century BC, the Temple of Apedemak was dedicated to the revered lion god who held a special place in the region's beliefs. As you journey to Mussawarat, you'll encounter the remnants of a vast temple complex, featuring the prominent Great Enclosure, the central temple surrounded by formidable walls adorned with numerous columns and carvings depicting the lion god Apedemak. Additionally, you'll explore the Temple of the Lion, a smaller shrine dedicated to Apedemak. With Naga and Mussawarat's historical treasures unveiled, your voyage continues to Meroe, an ancient city that once reigned as the capital of the Kingdom of Kush, celebrated for its grand pyramids. These pyramids, constructed during the 3rd century BC, were designed to house the tombs of the kingdom's rulers. Meroe boasts approximately 200 pyramids divided into three groups. The Northern Group boasts around 50 pyramids, while the Southern Group features roughly 20 pyramids. In the Western Group, the number of pyramids is smaller, with only a few remaining. You'll have the opportunity to explore several of these pyramids on foot, and for the adventurous, you can climb to the summits to savor the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. As the day comes to a close, you'll spend the night at the Meroe campsite or enjoy outdoor camping, fully immersing yourself in the ambiance of this historic site.

The tour will begin in Meroe where we will explore the impressive pyramids of the city before moving on to Khartoum, the Sudanese capital. We will pass through beautiful and varied landscapes in Sudan, including deserts, mountains, and fertile valleys. Lastly, if time permits, we will have the opportunity to explore the local markets and sample some of the Sudanese cuisine, which is noteworthy for its spicy flavors and use of locally sourced ingredients.
